Oscoda County tables request to fund Big Creek Township electronics-recycling event pending EGLE reimbursement conditions

Oscoda County administrators told the Board on May 12 that a request to use county EGLE planning grant funds to reimburse Big Creek Township for an upcoming electronics-recycling event cannot be paid unless the vendor contract is held in the county's name.
County Administrator Michelle Knepp said she consulted with EGLE and that “county grant funds can only reimburse the event if the vendor contract is officially held under Oscoda County's name.” The Board heard that the township's independent grant application was denied and that past county contributions to the event averaged about $500; the current request was for $2,000.
Knepp reported the county is pursuing contract restructuring options with the vendor, Resourceful Recycling, and that a separate EGLE tire grant application remains pending and could be covered by planning-grant funds if managed by the County and the township cooperates. Commissioners Varner and Handrich expressed reservations about committing county funds without guaranteed reimbursement eligibility and noted reported township hesitation to enter into a county-held contract.
Because the vendor contract situation and reimbursement eligibility remain unresolved, the Board unanimously tabled the request and directed the County Administrator to contact other local townships to gauge willingness to partner on centralized grant opportunities and report back at the next meeting. The electronics-recycling event is scheduled for June 13, 2026.
