Kennebunk Community Garden committee orders rain barrels, flags soil and donation plans for spring season

Kennebunk Community Garden Committee members on March 25 agreed to order rain barrels from KKWWD at $60 per barrel and discussed several spring preparations for the gardens.

Leslie Lindgren, director of the community garden and the author of the meeting minutes, said the soil in the new raised beds contained large pieces of wood and will need sifting and additional higher-quality soil; she said she will look into sourcing better soil. The committee also recorded a cultural-care note that garlic beds need to be side-dressed with bone meal.

The committee noted that Sydney at Garth’s will plant the group’s MHH crops and that members will meet pre-season with COS and CCC to assess crop needs and distribution. Lindgren suggested the garden consider providing produce to Eva’s Lunches, a meal program run by Community Harvest at St. Martha’s, and the suggestion was recorded for follow-up.

Administrative items included copies of the garden budget worksheet that Lindgren gave to the town manager and public works, and a reminder that the committee’s annual report is due April 1, 2026. The committee also scheduled regular meetings through October 28, 2026.

The committee recorded an outreach plan: Lindgren will create an arrangement of garden-grown flowers and vegetables for the Brick Store Museum’s Art in Bloom exhibit, April 1–4, to accompany a still life by Edith Barry. Norma Fox has submitted an application to join the committee, as noted in the minutes.
