Belgrade planning board approves variance to relocate and upgrade I-90 billboard

The Belgrade City-County Planning Board voted unanimously April 27 to approve a variance to relocate and upgrade an existing billboard along Interstate 90.
Planner I Emily Martinez opened the public hearing with a presentation on the variance request, noting a related sign variance previously approved for Lamar Advertising last year. Applicant Matt Clyde presented the application and argued that moving and upgrading the on-site sign would bring benefits to the community. Public commenter Syndney Best told the board she supported the proposed variance.
Board members discussed the implications of approving a sign variance for a billboard located outside the city limits and asked staff about the earlier Lamar Advertising approval. Senior Planner Brad Stein answered the board's questions and provided context about the prior variance.
Commissioner Jim Simon moved to approve the requested variance to relocate the billboard on site, upgrade it to a double-faced structure with a height of 25 feet and to allow a sign area of 378 square feet. Commissioner Sandy Lee seconded the motion; the vote was unanimous.
The meeting also approved the City-County Planning Board minutes from Feb. 23, 2026 by unanimous vote. The board adjourned at 7:56 p.m.
