Burlington School Committee elects chair, fills liaisons and subcommittees

The Burlington School Committee on April 14 chose new leadership and confirmed a slate of subcommittee and liaison appointments at its annual reorganization meeting.
A committee member moved to nominate Katherine Bonn as chair; another member seconded the motion and the committee approved the nomination by voice vote, recorded as 5–0–0. The outgoing meeting opener relinquished the gavel to the newly seated chair.
The vice chair race was contested. Members nominated Jeremy Brooks and Megan (last name shown variably in packet). Committee members debated whether to follow succession practices or rotate leadership. The committee conducted a roll-call vote that produced a split recorded in the meeting as 3 ayes and 2 nays on the vice-chair nomination; the tally was noted in the meeting record.
The committee also acted on appointments across standing committees and liaisons. Superintendent and committee members emphasized that several of the liaison and committee roles are time-consuming and carry full voting rights on their respective bodies. When discussing the Recreation Commission seat that the school committee appoints, members noted the commission’s composition under Burlington bylaws and unanimously appointed Jeremy Brooks as the school committee’s recreation commissioner delegate.
The meeting also confirmed administrative designees, including the superintendent as the school committee’s Lab Collaborative designee and named civil-rights and Title IX coordinators for students and staff. The committee approved the meeting warrant and took votes to adopt minutes for prior meetings, with abstentions recorded where members were absent.
The committee said it will continue to refine subcommittee assignments and encouraged members of the public to raise questions about specific appointments outside the formal vote.
