Newman council approves consent calendar, hears traffic and Measure L updates

The Newman City Council on April 28 approved its consent calendar by unanimous vote and received staff updates on traffic-safety projects and a Measure L-funded street reconstruction timetable.
A council member moved to approve the consent calendar, the motion was seconded and the electronic vote carried 5-0. The consent calendar included waiving readings of ordinances and resolutions and adoption of resolutions initiating proceedings for lighting and landscape assessments and supporting the county's Community Development Block Grant annual action plan.
City staff reported that Caltrans met recently with city leaders to review a long-requested traffic signal at Inyo and Highway 33, and emphasized that Caltrans typically relies on accident counts to justify signals. Staff also discussed related intersection projects at Sherman, Jensen and Highway 33. Separately, staff said the Measure L-funded L Street reconstruction project will be posted for a roughly three-week bid period next week, after which bids will be returned to council for award.
Council and staff also recognized longtime city employee Perfecto Alon on his retirement. Public-safety staff announced the department will honor three academy graduates from Columbia College at an upcoming event.
Next steps: the city will proceed with the advertised bid schedule for the L Street project and follow up with planning and Caltrans on traffic-signal timing and justification; no additional council action was taken at the meeting.
