DPW reports heavy snow response; parks near completion and new kiosks coming to Jericho Turnpike

The Village of New Hyde Park’s Department of Public Works reported extensive winter operations and multiple capital project updates at the Feb. 19 board meeting.
Igor Sikiric, the village superintendent of DPW, told the board that January sanitation totals were 361 tons (326 tons municipal solid waste, 15 tons newspaper and 20 tons commingled recyclables). He said routine repairs included replacing or relocating about five street signs and completing approximately eight pothole repairs, and that the DPW responded to two snow events in January. The Jan. 25 storm dropped an estimated 12–14 inches, Sikiric said, and crews worked through the night and continued snow removal and pedestrian walkway clearing for about two weeks.
Sikiric reported that the DPW renovation project is mostly complete but that a contractor still has a few punch-list items to finish. The board also heard that the new S 12th Street park construction is mostly complete; the remaining items are the bathrooms and a police booth. Trustee Rainer Burger and others praised staff and contractors for progress.
Mayor Christopher Devane said Sakowich Park is expected to open in April and that Marcus Christ Hall construction is moving forward. Notably, Trustee Rainer Burger referenced a projected completion around July 2026 while Mayor Devane discussed an earlier target for Marcus Christ Hall to open in May or June; the minutes record both projected timelines.
On parking, Mayor Devane said the village will remove on-street meters on Jericho Turnpike and install 28 new kiosks over the coming months, with 25 of those kiosks accepting Flowbird or credit-card payments. He said the switch is prompted by persistent attempts to jam meters by inserting taped coins.
