The Martinsville City School Board voted to adopt a new salary scale for teachers and paraprofessionals and announced it has accepted state funding to provide a retention bonus to all current employees.
Board chair Tammy Allen moved to approve the salary scale after noting city and state budgets were not yet finalized; the motion carried on a voice vote. During the meeting the superintendent said the board had "received, permission to get funding from the states" to provide an equal bonus to every employee and that the district was "hoping to be able to distribute $1,500 a piece per person," while adding the final amount had not been finalized.
The board framed the bonus as a retention measure intended for all employees, including teachers, bus drivers, maintenance and cafeteria staff. The superintendent thanked the board and city council for cooperation that allowed the district to accept the funds and said the administration will work through distribution details as they are finalized.
No dollar amounts beyond the district's $1,500 estimate were finalized at the meeting. The chair said the board would proceed with the adopted salary scale and would "regroup" if budgeted city or state support does not materialize.
The meeting moved on to other business after the vote; the board later entered closed session.
