The Office of Student Assistance and Relief (OSR) and the Student Tuition Recovery Fund (STRF) team reported coordinated outreach and claim‑processing efforts to assist students affected by school closures.
Brian, manager of OSR (filling in for the chief), summarized outreach activities that include informed‑choice events, closure‑related outreach when student rosters are available, one‑on‑one appointments, and partner engagement with federal, state and legal partners. He cited an Icon Collective outreach sprint that generated 70 STRF claims, contact with 58 students and 46 compiled claims ready for analytical review.
STRF staffer Yvette Johnson described Q2 processing volumes and staffing status: 108 claims processed in the quarter with 34 approvals and 74 denials/ineligible/unable to contact; 29 claims are awaiting payment at the State Controller's Office. STRF and OSR are collaborating to prioritize older claims, including Corinthian cases, after receiving supplemental data from the U.S. Department of Education to better calculate students' economic loss and move stalled claims forward.
STRF staff said students have four years from the date of school closure or other qualifying events to apply for the fund, appeals are allowed within 60 days of a denial notice, and efforts are underway to improve processing timelines through a CHISCLAP analysis (process‑stage timing) to identify bottlenecks.
