First Selectman reports state funding cuts, discusses speed cameras and town services

In his opening report the First Selectman summarized contacts with state legislators and noted that towns have seen reductions in education cost-share payments and in casino slot-revenue distributions. He said the slot-revenue fund currently holds about $152 million, but Willington receives far less than in past years and the town is working with state representatives to press concerns.

The report said there was no cost-of-living adjustment for some state employees since 2013 and that the current legislative session runs through May 6; final revenue outcomes will not be known until then. Town operations updates included routine permitting and maintenance items, a wiring issue discovered during a hot-water heater replacement, and a required notification to bargaining units about a potential health-insurance vendor change.

On public-safety topics, the First Selectman reported steep resident interest in speeding-address solutions. He said the town has been collecting speed data from signs installed by public works and that staff have been talking with a speed-camera vendor; he emphasized that any camera program would require a local ordinance and must follow state timing rules. The First Selectman said revenue from fines should not be the primary goal and that safety improvements should be the focus.

Finally, the First Selectman relayed a community announcement: the Willington Human Services Department will hold a fundraiser comedy night April 18 at the Rockville Elks Carriage House (9 North Park Street, Vernon).
