The Murphysboro City Council and police leadership promoted Officer Jonathan Hopkins to the rank of sergeant and administered the oath of office during the May 28 meeting.
Chief Elm introduced Hopkins’s record, saying Hopkins was hired in February 2020, returned from the academy that June, served on patrol and later as a detective, and "displayed a great ... outstanding demeanor of acting as police officer and investigator." The chief said Hopkins’s interviewing skills and case work led to his appointment as detective and that the promotion to sergeant was "well deserved."
Hopkins repeated the oath of office as administered by the mayor.
What happens next: Sergeant Hopkins will assume supervisory responsibilities as assigned by the chief.
