Planning department touts housing permits, site-improvement grants and comprehensive plan update

Planning staff reported processing numerous permits in 2024 including roughly 44 certificates of occupancy (new businesses) and a variety of building, mechanical and remodeling permits. Three residential developments were highlighted: Baker Landing (69 lots, reported as constructed and largely occupied), Richland Crossing (52 proposed units with 50 permits reviewed and 16 homes under construction) and Baker Square (53 lots approved). The director said the cluster of projects could add roughly 170 new rooftops in that part of the city if all build out as planned.
Economic development efforts include identifying five premier commercial sites, attending a Dallas economic-development conference to meet national retail and restaurant prospects, and continuing a Building Improvement Grant program that offers up to a 50% match not to exceed $5,000 per eligible store or property improvement. The presentation cited targeted marketing of parcels including an out-parcel near the former Sam’s Club and sites on Boulevard 26.
Staff also described the city’s comprehensive-plan update, led by Halff Engineering, with community workshops and an online survey conducted over the last year; a draft will be circulated for public review before planning, zoning and council consideration.
