Council receives updates on veterans tax exemption, library renovation and speed-control devices

At the Jan. 6 East Haven Town Council meeting members heard several routine reports and a written letter about veteran tax policy.
A statement addressed to Mayor Joseph Carpora thanked the council for expanding a property tax exemption and urged including veterans rated totally disabled because of individual unemployability (TDIU) under the town’s implementation of the state law. The reader said the state statute was amended and asked the town to honor TDIU veterans, and the council acknowledged receipt and thanked staff and advocates.
Library staff reported that renovations are progressing steadily and that a grand reopening date will be announced once the project is fully complete. Police staff said phase one of speed-control devices has been installed on the north end of East Haven, that additional devices are requested by residents, and that one detective position is vacant; the fire department noted a recent promotion.
Council also discussed appropriate channels for contacting members outside of meeting hours; legal staff reminded members and the public that official communications should follow established town procedures rather than reaching out to personal cell phones.
