Arlington releases 2026 county profile with new energy, climate and corridor data

Nicole Bowling of Arlington's Research & Strategic Initiatives group presented the newly released Arlington County profile for 2026, describing additional sections for energy, climate and environment, expanded health-and-wellness data and a larger community-services section that now lists nonprofit contractors for the county's Department of Human Services.
Bowling highlighted several data points in the draft: a 2026 population estimate of 244,300, a 16% increase in the county's 65-and-older population since 2020, and that 99% of net housing growth since the prior profile came from multifamily units. She said the office-job clusters remain concentrated in the county's planning corridors and pointed commissioners to a corridor-focused development dashboard that will be updated quarterly.
The profile adds a two-page energy, climate and environment section that compiles indicators such as storm-water performance, tree canopy, electric-vehicle counts and building-related emissions data; Bowling said staff will refine the forecast this summer and post spreadsheets and the interactive dashboard on the county open-data portal within days of the meeting.
Commissioners asked for additional transit coverage (VRE, Amtrak, MetroBus) and for more historical trend lines and peer comparisons to put forecasts in context; Bowling said she would incorporate requests and expected to refresh the forecast later in the summer.
