Committee member urges streamlined application and notification; counsel advises submitting request to superintendent

At the May 28 meeting the committee heard public comment from committee member Lindsay Dally urging staff to simplify the advisory-committee application and to notify committee members when openings are posted so they could recruit candidates.
Dally told the committee she had discussed the issue with counsel and said the current application contains many bookkeeping questions while only a couple of questions were used substantively for selection. "There's only two questions that we really look at," she said, arguing the application could be shortened and the selection process improved if members are alerted when positions are available.
Sammie Randolph, legal counsel, responded with procedural guidance: "As it relates to asking staff to update procedures, something that's deemed operational, probably the most succinct way to do it would be to submit, in your capacity as a member of this committee, a request to the superintendent's office that the committee either look at the application and or look at notification requirements related to the application. And through the office of the superintendent, it'll be routed to the appropriate CCSD administrator that is technically over this particular committee and provides support." Randolph's guidance described a written referral to the superintendent's office as the formal route for operational changes.
Another committee participant described recent state-legislature discussions about trafficking in the hospitality industry and urged that curriculum review include content to help students spot grooming and trafficking red flags at locations near schools. The committee did not take action on the curriculum suggestion during the meeting; Randolph's counsel guidance clarified how members could request staff review of operational procedures or program content through the superintendent's office.
The matter of updating the application and improving notification was not acted on during the meeting; counsel's advice was that the committee submit a written request to the superintendent's office to initiate staff review and routing.
