Plant running well; WPCA hears plan to reduce sludge-hauling by dewatering

Wastewater treatment plant staff told the Stratford Water Pollution Control Authority the plant is running well, recent maintenance has been completed, and a sludge dewatering project is being advanced to reduce hauling costs.
Mr. Hyde, reporting on plant operations, said routine maintenance and equipment replacements have kept the plant operating reliably. He explained recent snowfall is roughly equivalent to an inch of rain and usually has little immediate effect on flows, though larger rain events and inflow-and-infiltration can push flows higher.
On sludge handling, Mr. Hyde said the town currently hauls about six truckloads of sludge five days a week to Naugatuck and that hauling represents about 45–50% of the disposal cost. Staff are evaluating dewatering options to create a drier cake and reduce truck trips to an estimated one to 1.5 trucks per day. He said the proposal so far is large enough to require going out to bid and that staff will coordinate procurement and return with recommendations.
Board members had no further action items on operations at this meeting.
