Berlin commission approves August police and fire expenses, moves into closed session on fire chief appointment

Berlin — The Berlin Police and Fire Commission on Sept. 3 approved August 2025 expense vouchers for both departments, accepted departmental reports, and voted unanimously to go into closed session to consider a fire chief appointment.
The commission approved the Aug. 6, 2025 meeting minutes (motion recorded as made by Hess, seconded by Kren) and then approved business alarm-permit items listed on the agenda. A motion to approve an alarm application was recorded as made by Kren and seconded by Hess; the motion carried.
Fire department expenses for August (including a contract with ESO Solutions for incident reporting, routine supplies and fuel) were presented and approved on a motion by Hess, seconded by Kren. The fire department reported seven calls in August, including a combine fire and a grass fire outside of town, and described upcoming fundraising and community events such as a Tractor Supply farmers-market spot planned for Sept. 13 to recoup costs from a rain-affected car show.
Police department vouchers were reviewed and approved (motion by Kenokei, second by Hess). Items included postage, squad hardware (fire-extinguisher brackets), training fees (including Operation Rush for a new hire), Verizon SIMs for car units, breath-draw and OWI investigation fees, and tires for squad cars. Department staff noted an "air science add-on" shipment that is expected to be reimbursed through the drug task force, reducing net city cost.
The commission later moved into closed session under Wisconsin statute sec. 19.85(1)(c) to consider employment, promotion, compensation or performance data of public employees related to a fire chief panel and appointment; the motion to close session was made by Monahan, seconded by Kren, and the roll call vote was recorded as all yes.
The commission ended the open portion of the meeting with staff noting the closed-session discussion would proceed; the public portion of the meeting adjourned without further open votes.
