Selectmen set Town Administrator salary range and push recruitment forward

The Acushnet Board of Selectmen on Feb. 25 moved to post the Town Administrator position and set a broad salary range to improve recruitment flexibility. Members debated the advertised salary band and whether advanced degrees should be 'desirable but not required,' and directed staff to provide a draft posting for board review prior to public listing.
"If we go try to go below that I don't think we're going to get anybody qualified that can serve to do what we need to do," one member said while others urged keeping the lower end flexible to allow negotiation based on qualifications. The board reached consensus to post a range that gives the hiring authority room to negotiate, and asked Mr. Kelly to return a revised draft that cites the Town Charter job duties.
In the same discussion members requested clearer year-to-date expenditure reporting in the Fiscal 2026 draft budgets so the board and Finance Committee can better identify turn-backs and potential cuts. Mr. Kelly confirmed updated budgets have been loaded to reflect Fall town meeting changes and staff will prepare comparative options for board review.
The board voted to set the posting subject to final review and instructed staff to circulate the draft advertisement to members before it goes live.
