Council voted to adopt the city's sustainability strategy, "Fairfield Sustains," during the meeting. Council Member Pennington introduced the ordinance to authorize the city manager to approve and adopt the plan, which was considered on its third reading and carried by motion.
The plan, described in council discussion as roughly 90 pages, is framed as a strategic roadmap to protect and efficiently manage municipal resources while supporting economic vitality and quality of life. Sponsors told council the legislation is intended to coordinate efforts across departments and to expand public and private participation; it does not require every department to replace emergency or essential vehicles with electric vehicles.
Council members commended staff and local partners who helped develop the plan and noted engagement with Miami University and other community stakeholders during its preparation. The council also presented recognition awards to two city staff members for leadership on the plan's development and implementation.
The ordinance was adopted by council; separate budget and fund actions related to implementing the plan (including establishing a sustainability fund) were carried as part of the finance package later in the meeting.
