Acushnet selectmen authorize insurance payments for police repairs and promote sergeant

The Acushnet Board of Selectmen voted Feb. 25 to authorize the chief of police to expend insurance proceeds to pay vendors for equipment repairs after a lightning strike damaged police systems. Board members said the work was already completed in emergency response to restore safety and reliability.
"They fought like hell with the insurance company," one selectman said of the chief and staff, noting that the insurer increased its offer after negotiations. The board approved authorizing payments for two claim amounts discussed in the record and moved to clear the invoices so the vendor can be paid.
Separately, the board reviewed civil-service results from the sergeant exam and acted on a promotion. Chief Richmond summarized the certified list of top candidates—Adam Heit, Ryan Hempfield and Courtney (surname in record)—and recommended moving forward. "Any candidate out of the three that you choose is going to fit seamlessly in that role," the chief said.
By voice vote the board appointed Adam Heit as acting sergeant of the Acushnet Police Department, effective March 2, 2025. Members emphasized the need to follow civil-service procedures and to notify union representatives and Civil Service staff about next administrative steps.
The board also scheduled staff to meet with Civil Service mentors to finish required paperwork and to ensure the promotion is processed in accordance with civil-service rules.
