Laconia schools to shorten some summer programs; staffing hires announced
Summary

The Laconia School Board heard staffing and summer-program changes on May 19 as the superintendent outlined hires, start dates and operational adjustments to summer programming.
The superintendent said accounts-payable and administrative-assistant positions have been filled and that the incoming business administrator and the new administrative assistant will begin overlapping with current staff: the administrative assistant is scheduled to start June 22 and the business administrator is scheduled to start June 29. The board was told the middle-school principal search produced multiple candidates and the committee wants more time; a nomination is expected on the June agenda.
On summer programming, the superintendent said the district will keep elementary programs five days a week for five weeks; middle school programming will shift to a four-day schedule while offering a Friday option called the “keeping your cool” program for incoming sixth graders who need five-day support; the high school program will move to three days a week. The changes were described as a response to declining Friday attendance, student preferences for free time and budget-sustainability concerns.
Board members asked whether the district planned enrollment caps; the superintendent said middle and high school programs typically do not need caps, while elementary enrollment may be capped depending on staff availability. The superintendent said more details will be available as family responses come in.
The superintendent also noted nominations and award events coming up, and confirmed graduation is scheduled June 5 and the Huitt award ceremony is May 28. The board will continue the middle-school principal process and expects further updates at the June meeting.
