Ansonia wins roughly $789,000 DOT community‑connectivity grant for sidewalks near middle school

Sheila Ali, the city's project and grants administrator, told the Board of Aldermen on Nov. 20 that Ansonia received a Community Connectivity grant from the Department of Transportation worth about $789,000 to fund sidewalk work in the area of the middle school.
"We did receive $789,000," Ali said, describing the award as part of the mayor’s vision to improve pedestrian access near schools. Council members moved that the city accept the grant and approve associated sidewalk work included in the packet.
During the same report, members discussed progress on Olsson Drive, where cleanup and drainage work are underway; officials said environmental remediation required more time because of contamination and that paving and retaining‑wall work are in progress, with the field expected to be ready in 2025 subject to weather and developer activity.
Separately on new business, the board approved an engine replacement for a municipal vehicle; the motion and discussion specified approval of the engine replacement only, not a full remount. The board also approved an asphalt invoice and additional paving work as part of old business.
