Superintendent highlights district rise in state cap rankings, previews student events

The superintendent told the School Committee on May 26 that Salem Public Schools made measurable progress in the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education cap rankings based on an MCCAST-derived metric: the district moved from 47 to 84 out of 287 districts, a jump from roughly the 16th to the 29th percentile.

The superintendent framed the improvement as evidence of progress across the district and credited teachers and leaders for the gains. "This is really encouraging news ... a reflection of the impactful work that our educators do every day from preK to grade 12," the superintendent said.

Deputy Superintendent Paulie described several recent student-focused events: the Student Voice Summit (about 100 students presenting research projects with nearly 300 attendees), a future-educator signing day where roughly a dozen seniors committed to studying education, and unified sports day. The district also announced a rolling rally on May 30 to celebrate the boys basketball team's state championship run and three high-school graduation dates (New Liberty June 3, Salem Prep June 4, Salem High School June 5, weather permitting).

Committee members recommended featuring student presentations and the MCCAST improvement in the district newsletter and asked staff to provide hyperlinks to recent presentations. The superintendent noted more details are in the meeting packet and encouraged members and the public to review posted materials ahead of upcoming hearings and votes.
