Lacey Township honors fallen service members at Memorial Day ceremony

LACEY TOWNSHIP — Members of Lacey Township’s civic and veterans community gathered for a Memorial Day ceremony that combined prayers, musical honors and a student-led effort to send care packages to local graduates now serving in the U.S. military.
Mayor Tennis opened the ceremony, saying the community must “ensure that the stories are told, that their stories are told, their names are spoken, and their legacy remains a guiding light.” The Rev. John Campbell delivered the benediction, urging attendees to remember the sacrifices of those who ‘‘paid the ultimate price on behalf of our nation.’’
Students from the Moninoa Harbor Proud Cause, introduced by adviser Jackie Stsy, described a new care‑package initiative meant to connect the community with recent graduates now in uniform. "A care package may seem simple — snacks, toiletries, handwritten notes, or small reminders of home — but to someone serving far away, it means much more," Stsy said. The ceremony named Lacey Township High School alumni currently serving in the armed forces, including Addison Mendes (U.S. Coast Guard), Ethan Riley (U.S. Coast Guard), Aiden Wallace (U.S. Marine Corps), R.J. Cesny (Air National Guard/ U.S. Air Force), Ethan Ping (U.S. Marine Corps) and Cole Kchner (U.S. Army).
Representatives of local fire departments and veterans organizations offered remarks of thanks and remembrance. Scott Mozelle, chief of the Fort Fire Department, and other service leaders praised the community’s commitment to honoring those who served.
Bernie, identified at the ceremony as chairperson of the veterans committee, encouraged veterans in attendance to take an active role in local veteran affairs: "If you're a veteran, we'd love to have you on our veterans commission. Call 6931100," Bernie said, providing the commission’s contact for prospective members.
Organizers then moved to the wreath display and the memorial area; volunteer Christian Chola played taps and the school band, led by director Chris Monu, participated. The Rev. Campbell closed the service with a prayer for peace and for the families of the fallen.
The ceremony concluded with thanks to volunteers and an invitation for veterans to join the veterans commission; organizers said they plan to continue the student care‑package project in future years.
