The Bladensburg Town Council unanimously approved annexation resolution 02‑2025 on May 12 to bring roughly 7.0642 acres, including the public Playhouse, its parking and adjacent rights‑of‑way, into the town.
Town Administrator read written public questions and answered that the annexed Playhouse parcel will remain maintained by the Maryland National Capital Park and Planning Commission and that the town does not expect additional maintenance costs for municipal services, though the town could receive amusement‑tax revenue when the Playhouse charges for events. "This property is owned by Maryland National Capital Park and Planning Commission; they will continue the maintenance," the Town Administrator said.
The council also adopted Annexation Plan Resolution 24‑2025 to annex approximately 31.032 acres that include Bladensburg Waterfront Park along the Anacostia River. The clerk read the short title into the record and the council, after waiving full reading, voted unanimously to adopt the annexation plan.
Council Member Brown described the Playhouse annexation as a cultural amenity for residents: "I think we're all excited about the prospects of having this cultural center really as an amenity in the municipal border for our residents," she said. Town staff emphasized that the park properties are largely tax‑exempt and that Park Police will remain the primary responder for many park calls, limiting new general‑fund service obligations.
The council introduced Annexation Resolution 03‑2025, a companion item, and scheduled a public hearing on July 14, 2025 at 7 p.m. at Town Hall (4229 Edmonston Road). Staff was directed to post full documents and legal exhibits on the town website and to perform required actions to perfect the annexations under state procedure.
The measures passed unanimously; formal adoption records and detailed boundary exhibits are posted on the Town of Bladensburg website for public review.
