The Aston Township Board of Commissioners voted Wednesday to approve an intergovernmental agreement with Middletown Township and Chester Heights Borough to study the feasibility of a railroad Quiet Zone at a crossing where the three municipalities meet.
Commissioner Mcin moved the measure and it passed by voice vote. Officials said the agreement would allow the three municipalities to jointly commission and fund a study to determine whether railroad crossing safety, maintenance and testing requirements can be met so the municipalities could request a Quiet Zone.
Board members described the study as an initial, technical step rather than a binding commitment to change train operations. “It would allow Middletown, Aston and Chester Heights to get together to do a study whether it’s even feasible to request [a Quiet Zone],” an official said during the discussion.
The board approved the agreement and authorized the township solicitor to finalize necessary actions; the study’s scope and cost were not specified at the meeting. The study will determine next steps and any future formal requests to railroad regulators.
