Overton County Schools board honors long-serving staff and approves routine contracts, personnel items

Miss Dillon, a school staff member, led a recognition ceremony honoring Overton County Schools employees who have served 30 or 40 years, naming staff including Mary Allen, Dale King, Sadie Orr and others and inviting each to receive a certificate and a photograph. “Four decades of dedication to students and public education is truly remarkable, and we are honored to celebrate you tonight,” Miss Dillon said.
The board then moved through routine business. The chair read recommended awards for grounds/lawn-care contracts at several campuses — listing recommended vendors and dollar figures for each site — and the board approved the bid awards after a motion and a second (second recorded as Ashley Carr). The chair announced the motion carried.
Consent-agenda items were approved, including revisions to a general-purpose school item and a federal program revision. The board also approved Livingston Academy’s request to attend the FCCLA State Leadership Conference in Chattanooga April 9–11.
In new business the board approved personnel items, including a final letter of retirement for Merlin Bond and acceptance of resignation letters from multiple staff members. The board also approved a revision to the supplemental pay scale to add a football supplement and an assistant-coach supplement.
Board members reviewed fiscal-year projections for the budget that will begin July 1. The chair said the district is presenting a balanced budget. Members asked about safety funding next year; staff said the district will pursue available grant opportunities, noting an application focus on the LEAPS program for elementary grades in the coming cycle.
Operations updates included confirmation that a nurse remains assigned to every school, a pause-and-resume timeline for softball-field work, plans to review substitute pay scales in July–August, and an update that a newly acquired bus is equipped with GPS tracking to monitor routes and rider counts. Staff also announced a surplus-equipment sale of retired buses and other items scheduled for 10:00 a.m. Friday.
The meeting ended after a motion to adjourn by committee member Jane Plouse, seconded by Mike Hayes, with the chair announcing the vote in favor.
