Thomasville schools outline 2026 summer camps; district to invite students based on assessment data

Carmen Concepcion presented the Thomasville City Schools’ 2026 summer plans, describing a mix of targeted, invitation-only programming and open transition camps. The slate includes Read to Achieve (RTA) camps (now including selected first graders), campus credit recovery for exiting seniors, EC camp, AIG and multilingual learner programs, a CTE camp (robotics, drones and pathways) and transition camps for rising kindergarten, fourth, sixth and ninth graders.
Concepcion said RTA and other targeted camps will be by invitation using student data from DIBELS and end‑of‑grade (EOG) testing; transition camps for students changing campuses will be open to all in the specified rising grades. She noted capacity and transportation logistics: parents must register by May 1 to allow the transportation department to plan routes, and most camps will include transportation except for the kindergarten transition camp.
On testing and selection, Concepcion said academic retests that occur before the last days of school (by June 5) will be counted for growth and proficiency this year, so the district plans to offer retests during the school year and invite students to camps based on those results.
Concepcion provided estimated costs for the camps by program office: approximately $110,000 for the transition/RTA/credit recovery group, $13,000 for multilingual learners/AIG camp, about $23,195 for career and technical education, and $27,291 for EC programming; she reported an aggregate figure of approximately $190,443 for the academic services camps. Registration dates and invitation letters were described as coming after the board presentation.
Board members asked about capacity, student counts and data criteria; Concepcion said selection relies on assessment results and available funds, adding that the district no longer has ESSER funds and must be strategic about camp offerings.
The board did not take a separate vote on the summer plans; the presentation concluded with an invitation for parents to register and staff to follow up.
