Nutley authorizes up to $395,000 emergency roof repairs after storm damage

The Nutley Board of Commissioners authorized an emergency contract on March 3 to repair significant roof damage at town hall and the Department of Public Works garage, approving work with Gabriel Roofing and Sighting at a cost not to exceed $395,000.
Commissioner Evans outlined damage to municipal property from winter storms, said the DPW garage (35+ years old) had widespread leaks and that town hall also required urgent repair. She said the township had the roof evaluated by internal staff and outside experts, including an architect, and concluded the repairs were an emergency warranting immediate action under local public contracts law.
The resolution authorizes the commissioner of parks and public property and the municipal clerk to enter an emergency contract, with funds certified from a capital account and subject to adoption of the corresponding capital ordinance and receipt of outstanding compliance documents. Commissioners recorded consent votes to approve the emergency contract; the board also introduced a funded capital ordinance that would finance the repairs and was moved to second reading for April 7, 2026.
The emergency award authorizes the work to proceed immediately to protect personnel, equipment and public operations but notes the contract remains subject to completion of required vendor compliance paperwork and subsequent budget/capital ordinance steps.
