Englewood Cliffs honors officers, EMS after on-scene CPR saved 85-year-old

The Borough of Englewood Cliffs presented a proclamation March 12 honoring Police Officer Mark Rles and Police Officer Pete Rampersad and EMS personnel for performing lifesaving CPR on an 85-year-old resident on Feb. 22.
According to the proclamation read at the council meeting, officers were dispatched after the victim stopped breathing. Officers moved the victim to the floor, found the pulse fade and began CPR; Officer Rampersad connected the automated external defibrillator and performed chest compressions while Officer Rles provided rescue breaths. EMS personnel from Englewood Hospital—listed in the proclamation as paramedic Stephanie Scalera, EMT Laura Nan, EMT Dylan Lucas and EMT Gabrielle Santa Maria—assumed care on arrival and continued resuscitation using a LUCAS cardiopulmonary assist device. The proclamation says the patient regained a pulse after additional CPR, was transported, later received a pacemaker and was moved from intensive care with an expected full recovery.
"The borough of Englewood Cliffs Mayor and Council honor P. Mark Rles and P. Pete Rampersad and express their sincere appreciation," the proclamation says. Council members and the public applauded as the officers were recognized and photographed with the mayor and council.
The proclamation was presented during the council’s opening business and will be included in the official meeting record.
