Board appoints Willie Williams to fill vacant director seat after two-ballot process

The Evergreen School District Board of Directors voted on May 26 to appoint Willie Williams to the District 4 board seat after a two-ballot selection process.
On the first ballot no candidate received a majority. Directors discussed candidate strengths — including educational experience, mental-health expertise and bilingual community ties — and then held a second ballot. Superintendent Maloney read aloud the ballot tally: Williams received four votes on ballot two and was declared appointed; the swearing-in will occur at the June 9 board meeting.
Earlier in the meeting the board approved the consent agenda and the superintendent's consent agenda by voice votes. After an executive session to review the performance of a public employee, the board voted to uphold the superintendent’s decision to issue non-renewal notices for two employees (Tracy Mays and Mike George); both motions carried by voice vote.
During the director-selection discussion, board members emphasized the value of candidates’ experience with schools, student mental health and community connections. The board encouraged other applicants to continue community service and noted the appointment was subject to the usual oath and onboarding process.
The board recessed into a workshop on community signage, onboarding the new director, legislative updates and board protocol following formal business.
