He said three applicants were being put through polygraph screening and one applicant was considering an FBI internship.
Pazo listed common reasons candidates were disqualified during background investigations as "moral character" concerns, difficulty handling stress and adversity, drug use and impulse-control and interpersonal-skill issues. He also said a notable share of recent applicants are 2021–2023 graduates of Lake Stevens.
On staffing counts, Pazo said the department has 39 commissioned and 11 noncommissioned positions, with four current vacancies. Two officers are on field training officer (FTO) status; one is due to finish in three days and another is expected to complete FTO in late February or early March if successful. The department's eligibility list showed 111 candidates as of the latest update on the 31st.
The chief described outreach to lateral applicants and asked HR to check the Neogov portal for possible laterals. He also noted recent internal promotions and appointments, naming Brandon Fisk as the new sergeant and saying sergeants, a commander, a deputy chief and a corporal had been placed.
