Board adopts package of resolutions and approves several policies; opposes Senate Bill 1719

The Dickson County Board of Education on Feb. 26 voted to adopt a set of resolutions drafted with the Tennessee School Boards Association and approved several policy actions.
Legislative liaison Miss Thiel presented six resolutions from TSBA addressing education priorities; trustees voted to approve the package as presented. During discussion Mr. Haley asked the board to consider adding a separate resolution opposing Senate Bill 1719, a proposal affecting whether local governments elect or appoint a director of schools. "I believe the bill would let local governments choose whether to elect or appoint their director of schools," Mr. Haley said, and proposed the board adopt a resolution in opposition to SB 1719.
The board moved and seconded a resolution opposing SB 1719 and approved it by voice vote. Trustees also completed second readings and approvals for a set of district policies (1.1021, 4.10, 5.701 and 6.411) and expedited policy 1.806 on first and second reading because immediate donations were pending; motions for these actions passed at the meeting.
Board members said they would prepare an additional draft resolution about elected vs. appointed directors for formal consideration in March where timing was deemed important for legislative outreach.
Next steps: the district will transmit the adopted resolutions to TSBA and state legislators; staff will publish updated policy language as approved and move forward with donation processing under the revised policy.
