The Planning & Policy Committee voted to approve and forward to the Board of Commissioners a proposal to create a Director of Legal Affairs position to provide in-house day-to-day legal coordination.
Committee members said the role would handle contract review, routine legal questions, departmental coordination and parliamentarian duties while corporation counsel remains the statutorily board-appointed position for litigation and defense. Supporters said an in-house director would reduce reliance on hourly outside billing, improve department-level access to legal advice and depoliticize day-to-day legal work.
Commissioners discussed salary competitiveness and recruitment; staff said the position would be posted immediately upon board approval. The committee approved the motion in a roll-call vote and will forward the item to the full board for final approval.
