Calhoun County schools win $500,000 state safety grant to upgrade intercoms

Calhoun County’s school facilities director announced the district has been awarded a $500,000 state safety grant to replace aging analog intercoms with a digital system at the district’s three schools.
In a facilities update, Mr. Kiernan said the district applied to a statewide safety grant last August and recently received notice of the award. The new system will allow staff to connect all schools from a single phone, isolate sections of a building, update bell schedules and execute centralized lockdown or evacuation commands more quickly, he said. Mr. Kiernan said the district is reviewing vendors and hopes to install the system during the summer.
Mr. Kiernan also reported that recent fire inspections at Calhoun County High School and Saint Matthew’s K‑8 went well, that the district completed a districtwide tornado drill and that an earthquake mitigation walkthrough was conducted in coordination with Calhoun County Emergency Management Services.
Board members congratulated the facilities team on the award and asked for follow‑up on vendor selection and implementation timing.
