At the April 28 work session the Rockville Centre Board of Education heard a presentation on a proposed resolution to provide a property tax exemption for surviving spouses of police officers killed in the line of duty.
Ms. Veria described the proposal as an exemption "in an amount equal to 50% of the assessed value of their applicable real property." She said the measure is intended to recognize families who have lost an officer and to help affected families remain in their homes and keep children in the district schools. "It does have minimal fiscal impact because there's just so few people in the community," Ms. Veria said; she added the board did not have an exact count of eligible households.
The board opened the microphone for public comment on the proposed exemption. No final vote on the resolution was taken at the meeting and no fiscal estimate beyond "minimal" was provided in the discussion.
