Rockville Centre Board releases draft code of conduct updates, opens 30-day comment period

At its April 28 public work session the Rockville Centre Board of Education reviewed proposed revisions to the district code of conduct and opened a 30-day public comment period ahead of a scheduled July 1 adoption vote.

Ms. Dalton, who led the review committee, told the board the group met four times with stakeholders to align the code with current regulations and district policy. "One of the key areas of our focus this year was on strengthening the connection between our discipline practices and the district's wellness plan," she said. She said the draft clarifies that "elementary students will continue to have access to recess unless it is deemed unsafe by building leadership," and that parent- and student-friendly versions of the code will be made available on the district website.

The revisions also update language on academic integrity to reflect the district's approach to the "evolving use of artificial intelligence," Ms. Dalton said. The board opened the microphone to visitors for comment on the draft and reminded the public that the revised version is posted on the district website for a 30-day comment window before the board considers formal adoption on July 1.

Board members thanked the committee and recognized the contribution of parents, teachers and administrators to the revision process. No formal action on the code was taken at the meeting; the public comment period and the July 1 adoption timeline are the next procedural steps.
