Farmington R‑VII honors Special Olympics athletes, band and choir achievements, Nightline champions, ACT and A+ honorees and retirees

The Farmington R‑VII Board recognized a broad slate of student and staff achievements across athletics, music, academics and long service.
Gretchen Hill introduced the district’s Special Olympics athletes and coaches, praising their courage and the program’s role in building fitness and social skills. Hill named coaches Mary Barbee (noted as the head coach in her third year at Farmington R‑7), Jenny Moore and Christy Widows and called athletes forward to receive certificates.
Under arts and activities, band director Mrs. Mary Porter reported a strong season: the marching band fielded about 130 students (its largest turnout since 2019), earned top‑three finishes in prelims at multiple competitions and placed fifth in finals at Potosi; 18 students made All‑District Band and two made All‑State ensembles. Choir leadership reported a Misha Distinguished Scholar Scholastic Achievement Award, nine All‑District choir members and three All‑State choir invitations or mentions. Coach Sparks described a highly successful Nightline season including regionals and a division four mixed state championship — and noted exceptional academic recognitions for team members.
Dr. Ammons highlighted the A+ scholarship program requirements and honored Hudson Buchanan for 174.5 tutoring hours toward A+ eligibility; the superintendent also read a list of students who scored 30 or higher on the ACT. The board paused to honor a large group of retirees from across the district, naming individuals from elementary through high school and noting about 500 combined years of service and an average of roughly 29 years per retiree.
Mr. Chad Mills later presented participation data for athletics and activities, reporting roughly 405 male and 303 female athlete participants in MSHS athletics, 283 students in activities and a grand total of 991 participants in MSHS sports and activities, plus 1,278 students involved in clubs.
The recognitions were ceremonial; no formal policy votes were taken as part of the presentations. The board applauded honorees and thanked staff and families for support.
