The Southgate Board of Education on a first read reviewed two proposed K–5 science curricula for elementary schools and heard teacher testimonials about classroom results. District presenters said the adoption would align instruction with the Next Generation Science Standards and increase hands‑on, inquiry‑based science instruction.
Kate Dean, elementary science coach for the district, told the board the team selected TCI Science Alive for four traditional elementary schools because it “checks all the boxes” for phenomenon‑based and inquiry‑driven instruction, offers hands‑on investigations, and provides teacher supports, assessments and differentiation for multilingual learners. Dean said district student performance benchmarks currently show the district near a 40.3% state average while Wayne County averages about 28.3%, and the curriculum change is intended to narrow that opportunity gap.
Becky Farmer, a kindergarten teacher at Grogan Elementary who piloted the program, described how kindergartners engaged in simple experiments and vocabulary development. She said students enjoyed activities such as a weight‑comparison “race” and creating ramps to change the speed or direction of objects, adding, “It was great to see the students test different variables and share and test their ideas as a group.”
Fifth‑grade teacher Christina Kramer described an ecosystems unit in which students studied food chains, animal remains and energy transfer. Kramer said the curriculum’s leveled nonfiction texts and embedded comprehension practice helped integrate literacy and science instruction: “It was awesome to see” students analyze data and collaborate, she told the board.
Presenters emphasized assessment options within the programs—formative checks, program‑aligned tests and performance tasks—and described non‑consumable kits (e.g., balances, manipulatives, classroom materials) that factor into a three‑year implementation cost. The district recommended a multi‑year purchase option, noting upfront purchases of non‑consumables reduce per‑year cost over time.
Board members asked about differences between TCI and Amplify and whether materials are available in Spanish. Presenters said Amplify, chosen by North Point (an IB school), aligned more closely with North Point’s deeper IB inquiry units, while TCI met the district’s non‑negotiables for the four traditional elementary sites. Staff confirmed printable and digital materials for both programs can be provided in Spanish; bound classroom sets may be ordered based on district needs.
The district characterized the pilot as teacher‑led and said teachers had regular input via surveys and voluntary after‑school meetings. The board was asked to consider this first read and to return the item for formal approval at a subsequent meeting.
