Superintendent highlights programs, testing progress and summer grants
Summary

Roer noted the district’s Black History Month program drew nearly 400 attendees and thanked GSRP staff and volunteers. She described a drone after-school program (code 586) that has about 22 students enrolled and provides transportation and food for two-hour sessions. The superintendent also listed end-of-year dates for seniors and middle-school activities and acknowledged community partners including Alpha Kappa Alpha and donors who supported a popup prom-dress event.
Dr. Lewis, curriculum and instruction, reported that WIDA testing is nearly complete and that the M-STEP/PSAT testing window begins April 6. Preliminary NWEA data show student growth heading in a positive direction, and the district is entering a second partnership agreement with state and county partners to expand professional learning and curriculum resources for elementary and high school. Dr. Lewis said the district received an AAA grant for drivers training and a summer discovery learning grant (referenced in the meeting materials) that will allow the district to broaden summer offerings beyond the limits of Title funding.
Speakers clarified that the summer discovery funding is being managed with 21st United Way acting as the fiduciary, allowing the district to reallocate previously used summer funds into other classroom needs and to provide enrichment opportunities (field trips, swim lessons) in addition to required reading and math elements. Roer and Dr. Lewis said the district will track participation and student outcomes to evaluate the programs’ impact.
Superintendent Roer also announced the passing of longtime community member and volunteer Doug Sutherland and read a parent email celebrating a student’s acceptance to the International Academy, using it to underscore staff impact. Board members offered condolences and praised staff work and recruiting efforts. The superintendent and board noted ongoing recruitment activities and a potential teacher partnership with Oakland University.
The board agreed to further consider a proposal to audio-record workshops and to return with a formal recommendation next month. No budget details beyond grant names and fiscal arrangements were presented during the open session.
