"We scored a 98," the sheriff said, adding that the next steps include getting bids from local contractors for HVAC work and interior remodels that would convert some areas to a dormitory-style layout.
The sheriff said he expects to assemble cost estimates and described the plan as a multiyear effort. "Our projection is five years," he said, and added that he and another county official plan to meet legislators in Montgomery during a barbecue hosted by the Alabama Sheriff's Association to seek support for the initiative.
Officials discussed potential vendors during the meeting; the sheriff mentioned Cornerstone as a corrections contractor and Bob Barker as a supplier for bunks and fixtures. He said rising costs will factor into planning and that the county will seek solid numbers before moving forward.
