The East Baton Rouge Parish School Board on March 19 approved multiple facility namings at two high schools after supporters and family members made in-person remarks.
At Glen Oaks Senior High School the board approved naming the auditorium for Shirley Singleton and the field house for Coach Nolan Guill after relatives and former students recounted Singleton’s mentorship and Guill’s decades of coaching and community mentorship. The motion was moved by Mr. Lanus and seconded by Ms. Carla Powell Lewis; the board voted to approve the naming.
Later in the meeting the board approved several Scotlandville Magnet High School namings: Howard Davis Gymnasium, Carlos Sample Court (gym floor), William Breaux Stadium and Lloyd Norwood Field. Coach Carlos Sample and alumni addressed the board in support; Ms. Carla Powell Lewis made the motion and the board approved it.
These items were presented under the agenda’s naming requests; board members and community speakers framed the votes as opportunities to honor long-serving educators and coaches. No costs or implementation details beyond signage/renderings were specified at the meeting.
