Board approves $1.32 million and $2.34 million contracts for stadium and athletic-field upgrades

The Dexter Community School District Board of Education voted to award two construction contract packages intended to upgrade stadium and athletic-facility access, seating and site work.
Board members approved a not-to-exceed contract package for Al Rid Stadium improvements totaling $1,319,841 and a second package for high school athletic-field work totaling $2,338,844. Both awards were presented in recommendation letters dated April 22, 2026 and were approved by roll call.
Consultant Greg Brand walked trustees through the Al Rid scope, saying the project will move the main spectator entrance from the field house to the parking lot, add two ramps and a larger stair system, replace and refresh fencing and gates, create an accessible ambulance and delivery entrance and address leaks and exterior repairs on the concession/storage building. "We are revising the entrance into the stadium, primarily focused in the dashed area in the upper right," Brand said while describing the circulation and ADA improvements.
The high school athletic-fields package includes a plaza entrance off the parking lot, heavy-duty asphalt pathways to allow service vehicles, replacement batting cages and bleachers, taller backstops for safety and the installation of a taller protective net between baseball and soccer fields to reduce ball hazards. Staff told trustees that some alternates (for example, dismantling and relocating old bleachers) were considered but not recommended because of cost; the construction schedule aims for work to start June 1 with portions ready for the fall sports season.
Board discussion focused on bid variances, the breakdown of alternates and timing. Staff said the recommendation reflected a competitive process with multiple bidders and that Grainger/Granger (referenced in the packet) and subcontractor relationships produced the best coverage across trade packages.
Both contract awards were approved by roll call with all members present voting in the affirmative.
