DOE official outlines push for clean hydrogen, highlights $1 per-kilogram Hydrogen Shot target

Bob Shreking, division director of hydrogen with carbon management at the Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management, said hydrogen can be produced and used with far lower emissions and outlined the office’s work to scale what it calls “clean hydrogen.” "Hydrogen is a clean fuel that can be used to produce heat and power with only water as a byproduct," Shreking said.
Shreking said clean hydrogen can come from zero‑emissions electricity sources such as wind, solar, geothermal and nuclear, as well as from converting leak‑tight natural gas and sustainably sourced biomass into hydrogen while capturing and storing the resulting CO2. He said those pathways are necessary because, he added, “over 95% of the roughly 10 million metric tons of hydrogen currently produced in the United States comes from natural gas without the capture and geologic storage of CO2,” which generates significant emissions.
The office’s hydrogen‑with‑carbon‑management program, Shreking said, invests in projects to produce, transport, store and use hydrogen from domestic natural gas and sustainably sourced biomass while capturing and storing CO2 produced in the process. He tied that work to the Department of Energy’s Hydrogen Shot initiative, saying the initiative "aims to leverage new and innovative approaches to hydrogen production to reduce the production cost of clean hydrogen to $1 per 1 kilogram in one decade while achieving net zero carbon emissions as well."
Shreking highlighted collaboration with other DOE offices, including the Hydrogen and Fuel Cells Technology Office, as a means of accelerating the national clean hydrogen strategy and road map. He directed listeners to the Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management website for details on research and development efforts.
