Student services reports rising special-education referrals and staffing gaps

District student-services staff told the board they are seeing increased need: nine students currently on IEPs for preschool transitions (four at risk), 14 elementary students referred under MTSS (all so far qualifying for services), and a recent resignation by a registered behavior therapist; kindergarten screening shows about 60 expected enrollees and open-enrollment runs April 1'May 15.
At the March board meeting the student services presenter outlined caseload and staffing challenges heading into the next school year.
The presenter said transition meetings are underway for preschool-to-school-age students and that nine students currently receive IEP services tied to preschool transitions, with four students identified as at risk. He reported 14 elementary referrals through the MTSS process and said, so far, all these students have qualified for services.
Staffing pressures include the recent resignation (March 6) of a registered behavior therapist and two educational aides who intend to pursue student-teaching; the presenter said the district is evaluating how to replace key positions. He noted kindergarten-screening counts were at about 60 and reminded the board that open-enrollment runs from April 1 to May 15.
The board asked for comparative pay-rate information across neighboring districts and for updates on recruitment efforts; the presenter offered to provide that data in a future packet.
