Charity and Dan presented bids to replace aging stage lighting and described functionality improvements that would benefit all district productions — elementary through high school — and improve safety and reliability. Bids included a preferred package from Heartland Scenic Studio (equipment and software-based lighting console) and an alternative lower-detailed bid. Charity said the dimming system and hardware are aging, some fixtures no longer work and the setup is a safety concern because equipment has been stored in precarious places.
The district applied to the North Bend Foundation for a $10,000 grant to offset costs; Charity said she received a positive early signal from the foundation and that the foundation meeting to discuss requests was imminent. Dan explained the estimated vendor package ($36,000) plus installation and an electrician would bring total project costs into the low-to-mid $40,000 range; he asked the board to authorize staff to pursue the grant and take steps necessary to secure updated quotes and an installation plan.
The board moved to "take any action necessary to support the proposal" to update stage lighting; the motion passed unanimously. Board members emphasized the system would serve the entire district, improve production quality and address mounting safety concerns.
Next steps: staff will request updated, current bids from the preferred vendor, obtain electrician estimates for installation, and continue to pursue foundation grant funding. Installation timing will be planned to aim for completion before the 2026–27 performance season if funding and schedules permit.
