Watertown‑Mayer board approves staff realignments, policy second reads and nonrenewal resolution

The Watertown‑Mayer Public School District board approved a package of personnel and policy actions at its April 27 meeting that administrators said are intended to strengthen literacy and English‑learner supports while completing routine policy housekeeping.
Superintendent Scheler asked the board to adopt second and final reads of Policy 615 (testing accommodations, modifications and exemptions for IEPs, 504 plans and LEP students) and Policy 701 (district budget adoption). Both policies were advanced by motion and approved by voice vote.
The board then voted on Resolution 26.15, which the superintendent said concerned termination/nonrenewal of two probationary teaching positions. The resolution was carried by roll call and "passes seven to nothing," according to the meeting record.
Administrators also won approval to convert several part‑time roles into fuller positions. Superintendent Schuler told the board "we have right now about 20 students in the district that receive EL services" and recommended creating a district‑wide, full‑time English language learner (ELL) position (PreK–12). He said the position would be posted and funded for FY27 using state EL funds and carryover compensatory dollars, with the compensatory funding intended to cover the first year even if state hold‑harmless provisions change.
The board expanded a 0.5 literacy lead to a full‑time role funded by state literacy incentive aid and approved the creation of an elementary intervention teacher by combining portions of the literacy lead and EL intervention time. Administration said these moves were cost‑neutral to the general fund and intended to increase classroom coaching and targeted interventions.
All personnel and policy motions in this package were approved by majority voice votes following administration presentations and board discussion. The board’s next procedural step for the roofing contract and other capital projects will be considered separately at a future meeting.
