The El Campo Independent School District Board of Trustees voted to authorize the purchase of a handicap‑accessible playground and solid surfacing for the north side campus, approving spending up to $325,000 to cover the vendor bid and possible contingencies.
School staff told the board the lowest vendor bid in the board packet was about $297,000; the additional authorization is intended to cover site preparation, shading structures and any required fencing. Board members said the surface and accessibility upgrades are needed to ensure all students can use the play area.
Mr. Burton and Miss Andersen reviewed bid line items for surfacing and site work and answered board questions about placement and shade coverage. There was no recorded roll‑call tally in the packet; the board adopted the motion by voice vote.
The district plans to install the equipment this summer and staff said they will manage the project and any required site prep. The board did not identify a funding source change on the record; packet materials show the purchase as a capital expenditure in the facilities budget.
The board moved on to other business following the vote.
