El Campo ISD board tables decision on accessible playground purchase after questions on cost and timing

Trustees reviewed four shortlisted playground options from competing vendors and discussed siting, accessibility features and costs for an ADA-accessible playground intended for the Northside campus after planned campus reassignments.

Patrick Burton, who presented the options, said the Playwell Group proposals included swings, ADA ramps, rubber safety surfacing and a shade canopy, and that Playwell's offerings "had everything that we're looking for." Burton told the board the packet showed four options priced in the range presented to trustees (approximately $276,000 to $310,000) and that district staff recommended a not-to-exceed threshold of $350,000 to be paid from fund balance if the board chose to proceed.

Board members discussed timing relative to the Hutchins campus guaranteed maximum price (GMP) process and whether the playground purchase should wait until the district had final GMP numbers for ongoing bond projects. Concerns included ensuring apples-to-apples quotes across vendors, confirming age-appropriate equipment after campus moves, and whether additional site visits by vendor representatives were needed to validate preliminary estimates.

After discussion, a trustee moved to table the item to next month so staff can obtain GMP information and vendor site confirmations; the motion carried following a second. The board asked staff to meet with selected vendors and return with clarified scope, consistent pricing and a recommendation tied to the district's GMP timeline before taking a final vote.
