Commissioner John resigns from regional planning post and urges overhaul of school facilities maintenance

Commissioner John told the board this is his final year in office and announced his resignation from the Piedmont Triad Rural Planning Organization technical advisory committee, citing poor communication and administrative burden.

He then delivered a lengthy critique of the county’s school facilities maintenance and project oversight, saying the administration had repeatedly failed to deliver completed facility projects on budget and that the elementary schools lacked security vestibules approved in 2023. "I have no faith that that administrative department has the capacity, the efficiency, or the capability to continue to steward the county's facilities," John said, urging the county to consider hiring a private project management firm to prioritize and oversee repairs and renovations.

John cited examples: a grant‑funded elementary security project that stalled after initial spending, a multi‑million‑dollar high school project that exceeded budget and required additional county dollars for an unfinished football field, and a persistent archway at a middle school that he said remains in disrepair. He said these examples show a continuing stewardship problem and called for accountability and an alternative approach to managing capital projects.

The board did not take immediate action on John’s proposals during the meeting; his remarks were recorded as part of the regular session before the board recessed to a closed session for the county manager evaluation.
