Board members used their comment period to praise individual student accomplishments and to address a recent travel/hotel issue affecting a wrestling competitor and cheer team. The superintendent yielded to Miss Terteranova to recognize a student as the district’s unsung hero; board members repeatedly congratulated Jasmine Ellis and other athletes.
Board members described an incident involving hotel accommodations during a recent competition and expressed disappointment at how student absences and coach arrangements were handled. Mr. Fakori (board member) congratulated athletes and apologized for the experience, saying he felt responsible for what happened. Several members urged a brief, focused follow-up discussion with the superintendent rather than an executive-session matter and proposed small-group outreach to determine next steps.
The board scheduled an athletic committee meeting for the 31st at about 4:30 p.m. to review the circumstances and discuss potential responses, including drafting correspondence about expected vendor/hotel conduct and clarifying travel and reimbursement rules for sanctioned and non-sanctioned events. Members emphasized support for the students: "You should be very proud of all that you've accomplished," one board member told student participants.
Separately, the superintendent and staff noted enrollment pressures in the district, including roughly 60 new special-education enrollments this year and the upcoming opening of pre-K, which the administration said has increased outreach and planning demands.
The board closed with appreciations for student achievements and adjourned at about 7:17 p.m.
